WES ST. JON'S BIO
Wes St. Jon, known as "The Oilfield Cowboy", was born in Maryland and grew up on Tilghman Island, located in the Chesapeake Bay on Maryland's eastern shore. He developed an interest in playing guitar at age 14, and formed a band, playing at dances throughout his high school years. He worked in data processing for a couple of years after he graduated from school, with a company called Wilson Laurel Farms in Federalsburg, Maryland. He then enlisted in the Navy where he did a four year tour of duty, having a band while stationed on Guam and playing to entertain the sailors on ship when he was stationed aboard the U.S.S.Belmont.
After his release from the Navy, Wes went back to work for Wilson Laurel Farms, still wanting to pursue a career in music. He met his current wife, Faye, and they decided to move close to Nashville and be closer to the music business, so they settled in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. After four years there, Wes had an opportunity to go on the road to Jacksonville, Florida and entertain at a Holiday Inn. He told his wife to pack enough clothes for two weeks. Eight years later, they were still traveling! While entertaining in Louisiana, during the oil boom of the late 1970's, Wes got a chance to meet many people who worked in the Oilfield. Although he knew nothing about their way of life, he got to know and like them and started hanging out with them to learn some of their terminology. They would tease Wes when he was entertaining saying, "Play us an oilfield song!" Then they would laugh because there were no oilfield songs.
Wes decided it would be a great idea to write some music for the oilfield, so he took about a year and visited rigs, talking with all of the oilfield workers he could, learning their language and terminology. Then, he wrote ten songs, went to Nashville, recorded the music, called his album "Oilfield Cowboy", and the oilfield has been enjoying the music ever since.
People ask Wes if he has ever worked in the oilfield. The answer is no. He wrote the songs strictly from research only. He thinks the oilfield workers are the most unappreciated group of people in the country! So he has since done three more CD's - Patch Pride in 2006, and Boom Or Bust in 2010, and Cheater Pipe Tight in 2014. All four CD's have been done in Nashville with some of the finest pickers in the business. Musicians like Terry McMillan - finest harmonica player ever - Chris Leuzinger and Bruce Bouton - both played on all of Garth's music. Bruce Watkins - great rhythm guitar, fiddle, banjo, lead guitar player. Did a world tour with Dolly Parton in 2011. Jason Webb - awesome piano player - Jeff King - awesome lead guitar now playing with Reba McIntyre - Gordon Mote - extreme piano player - Duncan Mullins and Jimmy Carter - great bass players - and Tommy Wells on drums.
